Whether it’s a smart light bulb or fancy light strip, LEDs are a fun and easy way to add color and ambiance to your home, and the Govee Curtain Lights will take your decor to the next level. These eye-catching lights create a larger-than-life display on your wall, and they come programmed with all sorts of entertaining scenes, including festive holiday options, quirky animals, and soothing nature motifs.

We wanted to see how these new curtain lights perform, so I put them to the test in my home for several weeks. The bold look might not be for everyone, but if you want a highly customizable light display that takes up a whole wall, I think you’re going to like what the Govee Curtain Lights have to offer.

Here's what's included.

The Govee Curtain Lights are a unique decorative LED product. It features dozens of light strands that hang down, creating a curtain-like effect, and the resulting panel is just under 5 feet wide and around 6.5 feet tall. It features a total of 520 LED light beads, and they can be set to any color imaginable, as well as many different lighting effects.

You can control these smart LED lights through the Govee Home app, and it’s also possible to connect up to three sets of them together to create one extra-large curtain.

Installation is easy and there are multiple ways to go about it.

You can install the Govee Curtain Lights in three different ways, which I thought was a nice option considering they might be used in rentals or even dorm rooms. They come with seamless nails, double-sided tape, or hanging hooks, and you can choose to use one installation method or a combination of them.

The double-sided tape would be a good option if you wanted to put the lights on a window or avoid putting holes in your walls, but I opted to just use the nails, as it seemed like the most straightforward option.

The lights come with fairly detailed installation instructions that tell you how high off the ground to put the hooks, as well as how far apart to space them. I mostly did a good job measuring, but one of the hooks ended up a little bit lower than the others. It’s definitely noticeable, so I’d recommend double-checking your work to make sure the curtains look their best.

Still, the installation process was easier than expected, and the lights connected to my phone without any issues.

We were even able to do a shameless promo!

As I started playing around with the curtain lights, I was impressed by how many different effects they offer. While other Govee lights I’ve tested might have had a few dozen lighting effects, these come with 86 different preset scenes. There are classic options like a gradient rainbow and twinkling lights, as well as more creative effects.

The main effect categories include “Natural,” which has things like waves or a meteor, and “Festival,” which offers lighting scenes for all holidays. There’s also a tab of “Funny” options, which includes things like a tic-tac-toe board and arcade games, and an “Animals” tab with more than a dozen animal-themes patterns.

I will say that some effects are better than others — there are definitely a few that you can’t tell what it’s supposed to be, such as the “jumping chicken.”

In addition to all these preset lighting scenes, you can set the curtain to a solid color, draw a design, or sync the lights up to music. These Govee lights would be fun in a college dorm room or game room, as they’re bright, fun, and easy to customize.

Most decorative LED lights are for indoor use, so I was pleasantly surprised that the Govee Curtain Lights are installable outside. The lights and control box have an IP65 rating, which means they can withstand being splashed by water or rained on. The plug is more sensitive with an IP44 rating, so you may want to put it in a covered location.

These lights could be a fun decoration out on a patio or in a pool area, and I can see them being especially fun if you’re hosting a holiday party.

One of my first thoughts about these curtain lights is that kids would love them, but the instructions specify that they should be kept out of reach of children. Because the light strands are more than 6 feet long, the lights can be dangerous if they’re accidentally wrapped around a child’s neck or if someone tries to hang on them.

For this reason, you’ll want to avoid putting them in a child’s bedroom or play area. Instead, they’re best used for teens or adults.

The Govee Curtain Lights have a MSRP of $129.99, and that’s quite expensive for this style of LED lights. There are plenty of curtain lights on Amazon that cost as little as $20, though these super inexpensive options typically don’t offer lighting effects, just solid colors.

Even if you want smart lights that you can control with your phone and customize, there are products that cost between $50 and $80—such as the Avatar Controls Curtain Lights.

The Govee Curtain Lights are a fun and unique way to add color and personality to a space.

The Govee Curtain Lights are a solid product—and I wouldn’t expect anything less from the brand, which makes a variety of high-quality LED lights. The lights are easy to set up (just be sure to measure carefully), and you can even put them outdoors, if desired. Plus, they come programmed with more than 80 fun lighting scenes for just about every occasion imaginable.

That said, this product is expensive when compared to other curtain lights out there today. I’ve most commonly seen these lights used in teenager’s bedrooms and dorm rooms, and for these applications, $130 is a bit steep.

Still, if you love the look of these lights and can deal with the price point, you won’t be disappointed in the quality or performance they offer.

This unique lighting scheme can be hung indoors or out and display an array of colors and designs, including your own custom ones.
